Meet Our Intern

Keira Diaz - Intern
I’m Keira Diaz, a junior at Texas State University studying Social Work with a minor in Criminal Justice. As an intern for Speaking Heart 2 Heart, I contributed to creating a mental health wellness workshop at the Meadows Center in San Marcos, designed to provide mental health relief for women in the community.

During my internship, I gathered peer-reviewed research examining how women of color—particularly those with intersecting identities such as caregivers, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those facing socioeconomic challenges—experience unique mental health risk factors. I focused on understanding the firsthand experiences of diverse women in our community, conducting research that informed our workshop’s approach to serving the San Marcos demographic, which includes a large population of college students and Latino residents.

As the yoga instructor for our wellness workshop, I led sessions focused on poses that release stress stored in the body and reset the nervous system. I also designed and handmade custom shirts for the workshop, combining my passion for fashion with our mission to encourage women’s self-expression.

My work with Speaking Heart 2 Heart reinforced my commitment to women’s mental wellness and my career goal of becoming a forensic social worker, advocating for mental health treatment and rehabilitative care for women in the criminal justice system.
